about

This is one of the tunes I had never heard before I began work on this album. It's a simple tune and it makes me happy. I was on the train, returning from New York to Boston after Thanksgiving 2014, trying to read a book about form in music, where this tune is presented as an example. I thought: "Oh great, a new Christmas tune!" Actually, an old one, circa 1600. It's sometimes frustrating to read music books in settings of enforced quiet, because I don't have a great ability to imagine the sound of written music when I can't sing a few notes or play them on an instrument; I didn't want to disturb my neighbor on the train with some tentative humming. But when I arrived home I quickly acquainted myself with the tune and began work on this two-voice arrangement. It's worth knowing that the author of the lyrics for the carol, Friedrich Spee, was an outspoken opponent of the witchcraft trials that had become the frenzy of his time and was known for articulating one of the first rigorous arguments against torture.

Instrument: harp, upright bass
