about

In this album I've been sparing in my use of sustained sonorities, not because I don't favor them, but because they are much more problematic to work with than, say, the quick onset and decay of a harpsichord tone -- more problematic in a digital environment where synthesized vibrato can sound unnatural and the micro-rests that would be added by a live performer become glaring in their absence (though they can be written in where needed). The current arrangement is one of the few places where, after experimenting with different instrument combinations and keys, I found a setting with sustained sonorities that I really liked. I generally prefer the sound of individual string instruments over the ubiquitous "string section" but this arrangement is one case where a string section was exactly what I wanted to hear. When I began work on this piece I intended to take a more contrapuntal approach but for whatever reason I found myself wanting to push the bass line up to create a lighter sound, and to work in a more harmonic style. The harmony is strictly in three parts and I tried to use only the notes I really needed.

Instrument: oboe and two bassoons (first section); piccolo and tremolo strings (second section)
Style: three-part harmony
