about

This three-voice version of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel employs the same soprano and bass lines that can be found in the two-voice version on this album. When a possible third voice enters the mix, the question is always how to employ it in a way that achieves something meaningful that would be hard to do in a two-voice version. For some time I wondered whether there was any good reason to add a third voice, but the reason became clear when I realized that a beautiful effect might arise if the inner voice could transform the implicit minor tonality at the cadences into a major tonality, an effect that I had heard in other, very different arrangements of this piece. Once I decided what the inner voice would do at the cadences, the rest of the line came together. This setting for harp and upright bass reminds me of what Renaissance vocal music sometimes sounds like when it is transcribed for an ensemble of plucked instruments.

Instrument: harp, upright bass
Style: three-voice counterpoint
