about

This piece opens in two-part counterpoint; after the tune is stated once, the two lines are repeated in a higher range with a third voice added below them. (It's the only place in the album where a part that had functioned as a bass line moves up to become a middle voice with a new bass line placed below it.) After the three-voice passage ends, the initial two-voice music is repeated but with different instruments, toy piano and string bass.

You might notice a gesture where the bass line repeats the same pitch -- the tonic -- in a sequence of four half-notes. That gesture started out as a "musical placeholder" that I added to the score because I couldn't think of anything else to do in that particular place. However, when I realized that those four half-notes could evoke the sound of a slow drum, the passage became the basis of the arrangement, and gave me the idea of actually introducing timpani into the piece. Those four half-notes in the bass could also be heard as a slowed-down echo of a fragment of the tune itself, where there are four quarter-notes at a repeated pitch.

Instruments: harp, timpani, toy piano, bass
Style: two and three-voice counterpoint
