about

As I mentioned in the album Q&A this was one of the few tunes I hesitated to arrange, because I felt I had already heard it too many times in my life. But not only did the work turn out to be fun, it showed me how a new arrangement can make one want to hear a tune for the n+1st time where n is some very high number of previous exposures. I suppose what I was seeking in this arrangement is a sense of boisterous energy and play. Some technical nuances of the piece that were fun to work out were the shape of the accompaniment at the words "jingle bells" (how it descends in eighth notes and then ascends chromatically in an eighth note triplet) and how it proceeds to explore some minor harmony before returning to an ebullient major.

Instrument: piano
Style: two-voice counterpoint
