about

Beguiling as this tune is, I was a bit hesitant to approach it at first because it already exists in so many sublime arrangements, notably those of Bach, Praetorious, and Pearsall. What emerged, though, is one of my favorite pieces in the album. On a technical level I found myself gravitating towards a more consonant style and a stricter treatment of dissonance than I used in the pieces I had worked on earlier. One of the questions that comes up in writing counterpoint is how much similar motion is too much -- that's to say, how often, and for how long, can the voices move in the same melodic direction (both up, or both down) while still maintaining a sense of overall independence. In working on this piece it occurred to me that extensive use of similar motion becomes possible if the voices move in contrary motion in the "right" places -- at a few critical points. I had the sound of glockenspiel in mind as I remembered hearing either a mallet or bell-like instrument used in another arrangement somewhere, but I haven't tracked it down. As I came close to finishing this piece, I thought of the great composers who had set the tune before and how they must have completed their score and then had to wait days, months, or even years to hear a performance. It felt all the more bizarre and incredible, therefore, that I was able to finish my own version of the piece, generate an audio file and upload it to the web, and then be able to walk around my house listening to it on my mobile phone within a minute after I had put the last note in place. I took advantage of the new possibility, and listened to the piece around around fifty times that evening.

Instrument: harp, glockenspiel, upright bass
Style: two-voice counterpoint
