about

This piece features six repetitions of the tune as the bass line moves between three different versions, with each version played twice. The first bass line is the simplest harmonically, but it features some playful ornamentation that emerged after extensive tweaking. As I worked on this I was interested to notice that placing ornaments in the bass can have a similar effect to ornamenting the melody: you come away feeling you've heard a spiced up version of the tune, regardless of whether that spice has been added to the tune proper or its accompaniment. The second bass line is not as heavily ornamented, but it features darker harmonies and greater rhythmic contrast with the tune. The third bass line then reaches the highest level of complexity and energy, leaving nowhere further to go except to stop!
