about

This is one of the tunes that seemed to resist an elaborate contrapuntal line, so I worked to keep the bass line simple, but still distinct and rhythmically active. This rendering on pipe organ has mostly the same music as the other version of Hark! on the album, which was the first I created; the sustained sonority of the organ brought one or two dissonances to the forefront and also changed my perception of some of the phrasing in the bass, so I did make some small musical revisions in creating this second version. The pipe organ does not have a homogeneous sound as those new to it might assume; rather, each organ possess multiple sets or "ranks" of pipes with produce distinct timbres or qualities of sound. Organists are experts, among other things, at combining these sounds and matching them to specific pieces. In creating a digital rendering with pipe organ, one can simply apply a generic pipe organ sound, or one can work with samples of individual organ timbres and try to combine them, in much the way an organist would, to create a pleasing effect -- that's what I tried to do here and in the other organ piece on the album, the two-voice version of O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
