about

The steady quarter notes of this tune inspired me to write a rhythmically elaborate contrapuntal line that pushes and pulls against the top voice. While the bass part is highly chromatic (it uses lots of notes that are not in the home key), the bass in fact outlines fairly simple harmonies and is generally consonant and diatonic at all the places where it coincides with a note entry in the top voice. As in the other contrapuntal writing in the album, I encountered many situations where I could do something that would make the bass line more beautiful on its own, and might still conform to the rules of the style I've chosen, but which would steal too much attention from the top voice and make it impossible to follow. My approach in these situations was always to preserve the clarity of the top voice. If you are accustomed to simpler presentations of the tune and are just becoming acquainted with this arrangement, you might still find the bass line draws you away from the tune at first; however my hope is that a listener acquainted with both parts might share my sense that those parts are only at play with each other and nothing more severe.
