about

I love the way this carol brings to mind thoughts of spring, in midwinter.

After I had finished the counterpoint for this beautiful tune, working with piano as first step, I imagined the music played by an early wind ensemble. In fact I adhered to Renaissance contrapuntal style as I understand it here (with perhaps a liberty or two). While I didn't have samples of early wind instruments available I was able to achieve the sound I had in mind using tuba, contrabassoon, piccolo, and English horn. While the contrabassoon is indeed assertive in places, I love its deep, buzzing presence.

Instruments: tuba and contrabassoon (outer sections), piccolo and English horn (middle section)
Style: two-voice counterpoint
