In this arrangement I was aspiring toward that sense of continuous harmonic change and forward drive that I admire so much in Bach. As I worked I didn't feel I was straying particularly far afield in my harmonic choices; as the sounds came together and seemed uncannily familiar to me, I wondered if I might be making similar choices to those I had heard somewhere else long before and internalized -- that is always a possibility in music, where composers often face the same situations with the same sets of options; but listening to it later I do hear a more persistent chromaticism than is probably found in many arrangements of this particular tune. One of the challenges in such a style, where you set an expectation of pungent harmonies that change twice each measure, is how to keep the change going long enough -- how to get to the end of a phrase without running out material. In looking back at the score I notice something I might not have remembered from listening alone: many of the sonorities here employ only four notes sounding at once, with a good number of them having only three notes.
