about

Carol Colors began with this piece. As I mentioned in the album Q&A, I had been reading David Berkman's Jazz Harmony Book and had been inspired by his demonstration of how Silent Night can be reharmonized with a jazz palette. I wrote six of my own reharmonizations, each one a journey that left me inspired but also temporarily exhausted, as I felt I had employed almost everything I understood about harmony up to that point. Some listeners might wonder which style takes longer to write -- the dense harmonic style of this piece, or the sparser two-voice counterpoint of many of the other pieces in the album. While counterpoint is sometimes considered the more forbidding topic, I find that dense harmonies actually take longer to work out -- there are so many more notes to grapple with! As the idea for this album took shape I looked for a way to combine my six versions of Silent Night into a single piece. Since each little piece is so laden with harmonic color I found they created a sense of "oversaturation" when played one after the other in their initial versions, so I worked to maintain contrast in the sequence by transposing some of the music to different ranges and also introducing some changes to closely related keys in between sections. The piece has the structure of "Variations On A Theme" but the variations here are harmonic and not melodic.
